Hands

I love My Father, I Hate My Father

As a child, a shovel was placed into my hands.
I learned to be a good worker.
I love my father.

As a child, I was threatened to get dropped off on the side of the side of the road if I didn’t say where the women’s shelter placed my mother.
I cried as I told him what I knew.
I hate my father.

As a child, I fed the chickens and watered them as well as all the plant and trees.
I learned responsibility.
I love my father.

As a child, I saw a woman dragged by her hair on gravel while getting hit in the face.
I did nothing as I stood there.
I hate my father.

I was raised never to raise a hand to my sisters.
I learned physical respect for my family.
I love my father.

I’ve seen a man raise his hand and yank a woman down by her hair for something she said as he was sitting at a kitchen table.
I learned how alcohol could change someone.
I hate my father.

I saw a man have a family, provide for his family, protect his family.
I learned how to be a Dad.
I love my father.

I’ve seen the scared look on a woman’s face, the sadness, the bruises.
I’ve never learned not to care about this.
I hate my father.

A man beating on woman has taught me never to lay my hands on a woman.
I love and hate my father.
