10 Things You Should Know About… 9

Ten Things You Should Know About Chicanos

1. Sometimes Chicanos are known to iron their boxer
shorts like dress slacks with crisp creases.

2. It has been said that most Chicanos like to drink their
wine wrapped in the brown paper bag the bottle came in
at the time of purchase.

3. The suffix “ed” indeed has a major significance in
everyday Chicano language, ie: “I really likeded it” or
“ouch!, that hurted me”

4. Mijos law #7 knives over guns any day of
the week and twice on Sundays
Mijos law #2 beware of Chicano Judo
Judo don’t know if I have a gun or a knife, puto!

5. It is widely knows that in some parts of the US
George Lopez is an ordained saint, Art Lebo is the patron
saint of music, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong are
disciples of an underground religion, Carlos Santana is
a Demi God and I do believe that in some pa
of Mexico. Vicente Fernandez is God himself.

6. To all non-Chicano peoples, please do not be alarmed
if you visit a Chicano home and find the family
photos framed in fantastic shapes and designs such as
hearts or multi-squared diamonds and the sort. Maybe complimented
with baby shoes or miniature boxing gloves. This is
just sentimental memorabilia and please pay little attention
to the chip bag like material they are constructed of
the material is imported from the furthest corners
of various states.

7. Mattress fabric, trash bags, pant lining, and boxer short
elastic bands may second for string to be strung.

“Loco” please do not be afraid, please do not call

is very common amongst the male species
in today’s Chicano society.

10. Although the definition has never changed
Xi or Chi – of Mexican Descent and Cano – of American Descent
or Mexican American, the breed itself has
indeed evolved tremendously.
Today, I myself consider me and my family Mestizos
meaning “of mixed blood.” Having Spanish and Native American
blood lines as well as Puerto Rican, Guatemalan and Mexican
lines, Here in New Mexico the generations of blood lines have
intertwined and raped one another to the point of extreme
Mestizoness… However, the “pride” of the original
Chicano remains strong. From the heart of the barrio to the
Round House of Santa Fe
on up to the Supreme Court. Presidential Candidates,
Governors, Mayors, and Senators alike all share
these few traits of Chicanismo. Comedians, doctors
writers and homemakers all as one bonded by history.
The stories are abundant and the numbers
continue to grow. For now these are 10 simple things…

This poem had me laughing because unless you’re from ‘Burque, you may not get it haha. Especially number 3…I am still sometimes a victim to “I banged my elbow and it HURTED!”

“Here in New Mexico the generations of blood lines have
intertwined and raped one another to the point of extreme
    Mestizoness”

This is like a mantra. We wear our histories so deeply within us, but the world can be so oblivious to it. Keep it up!

  2. “Ten Things You Should Know About Chicanos” is easily my favorite poem on this subject! It’s witty and accurate! This opening line is PERFECT:
“1. Sometimes Chicanos are known to iron their boxer
shorts like dress slacks with crisp creases.”
I also loved “Carlos Santana is a Demi God”
This piece is well versed, well written and a fantastic expression. This writer has a great talent!

  3. V,
I loved your Chicano pride poem. Very funny and close to the heart. I loved verse nine, “Please don’t be afraid and please don’t call 911 or please do not attempt to contact any asylums looking for escaped patients”

  4. V,
I identify with your 10 sentiments. It is an enjoyable read. I appreciate the humor with which you address our unique and creative culture. Too bad the prompt wasn’t 100 Things you should know about…. I could read it all day. — 1LP

  5. SD,
I like the way your poem is constructed and how you break away from the number structure, fracturing your clauses. I enjoy short succinct poems like this one. The turn at the end is nice and the question posed to the reader is good. –1LP

  6. I like that it starts off from talking about life, in general.
And then transitions into his personal life.
” I write my life down every day, so my life
in person has become my life
    on paper,” Very well said.
I think many people can relate.

  7. V – Very humorous poem. I enjoyed the insight into the Chicano home. Perhaps you can answer, what influence does La Malinche have in your life, if any?
